What Can You Do?




            People want to do the impossible. Especially if you have goals that are beyond your comprehension. And sometimes when it comes to doing the impossible the thought that comes into our mind to stop us from even trying is, “I can’t do that.”


            I can’t run a mile under 5 minutes. I can’t sing a song in front of a crowd. I can’t pass my math class. I can’t run a business. I can’t put my face online. I can’t lead a team. What is your “I can’t” story that you tell yourself? I want you to take a moment and think about it.


            Now this is the truth that will probably shock you for a moment and that is, you're right. You are right. You can’t… yet. Not yet. Say it with me, “I can’t… yet.”


            For so many people who want to do great things, we get so caught up in wanting to do the impossible thing that we lose sight of the things that we can do. And let me tell you something. What you can do is so much more powerful and important than what you can’t do. You may be asking the question why? Well, that is because when you focus on the things you can do, eventually you will have the ability to do what you can’t. But if you focus only on what you can’t do, you will be paralyzed and end up doing nothing.


            This is my bread and butter. You can take any goal that you have and instead of focusing on what you don’t have or can’t do simply ask the question, “What can I do?” And you will find steps that will get you closer to that goal. Can’t run a mile under 5 minutes? Well, what can you do? Well, can you get into 7 minutes? Can you get it to 6 minutes? Can you research how to get a 6-minute mile? Can you ask someone to help train you to get it close to 5 minutes and eventually under 5?


            Depending on the size of your dream, it may need to take time, but there is always something that you can do towards a goal. And you can either focus on what you can do or what you can’t do.


            This is also a cure for people who deal with a lot of stress. If you are a person who gets overwhelmed easily, ask yourself what can you do right now. Why because that is all you can do. All you can do when it comes to greatest is what you can do, and if you are willing to focus on what you can do eventually you will be able to do the things you never thought you could. But it starts exactly where you are.


            I have a dream to impact that world. And I had to stop and ask myself the question, Can I impact the world? Well let’s shrink it even more, can I impact Oklahoma? Tulsa? A school in Tulsa Oklahoma? Well, I know for a fact I can impact a school in Tulsa Oklahoma. I am starting right here where I am at with what I know I can do, and I know eventually I will make my mark in the world.


            So many people are afraid of their dreams or even to dream, but it is because it looks scary, impossible, and big. But when you take the time to shrink the dream down into steps, it no longer looks daunting. We will dive into dreams in a later chapter, but for now, I want to embrace not being afraid of dreaming big, because you know that your job is not to stress out about what you can’t do, but instead to ask the question what can you do? That question alone can help to make the impossible possible.
