You have to believe in something outside of yourself.
After our first lost it was hard.
For a majority of the guys on the team, this was the first time they ever stepped on the court. According to everyone we were the cutest team… mainly because we were the smallest and youngest.
While teams are trying to grab rim or dunk. Ours were simply trying to touch the net. While some teams went over plays. Ours were practicing dribbling and shooting a basketball. There was just no chance.
After the game was over, we looked up at the scoreboard and only saw four points.
Four points.
I saw heads were down, discouragement kicking in.
And as we closed our huddle session, naturally as a preacher and someone who’s walked with God through difficult situations, I said, “God is good” to which they responded, “All the time”. And then I said it louder and louder, and we went back and forth until the whole gym heard it.
Wait the players that lost and only scored four points are yelling out God is good, all the time?
Yup.
And that became our tradition.
After every game we would yell it.
And I will never forget the time we won our first game chanting that. It was like we got to in that moment taste God’s goodness.
There is something about believing in something outside of yourself. For us that was believing in Jesus. What is it for you?
We have to believe that something out there is helping us, walking with us, leading us, even in defeat. As a matter of fact we have to believe that there is something leading us from defeat into success, into growth. For us that is the Holy Spirit.
It gave us strength to show up and to do our part.
It was God’s goodness that carried us. Not to just to win games, but to becomes great players, on and off the court.
What is carrying you through your defeats? Do you just assume the world is after you? DO you assume that “nothing” works out for you?
Maybe it’s time to start believing in something outside of yourself.
It will give you peace.
It will help you to focus on what you can control versus what you can’t control.
What can you believe in?
Who can you believe in?
If you don’t have anything, then I want to invite you to start with believing in God. Because the same God that is for me, is the same God that is for you. Not just to help you win games, but to become the best version of how you were created.
Believe.
Live.
Win.
