Lock in with Foolish Focus

It’s been a huge pause on blogs, but we’re back at it—continuing the lessons from coaching a high school basketball team from 4 points to champions. Feel free to start at the beginning.

Stop trying to do everything… and just do one thing.

The day after a brutal loss, I had the chance to connect with one of the players.

“That was a tough loss yesterday,” said the player.“Yeah, it was,” I responded. “What were you focusing on?”

The player thought for a second and said, “I don’t know.”

What about you?

What are you focusing on?Do you know—and I mean exactly know—what you’re focusing on?

It can be overwhelming when you think about all the things you need to do in a game. The pace moves so fast that you don’t even know what happened in the course of an 8-minute quarter.

Have you ever felt that way?Like there were so many things to focus on that you ended up focusing on nothing?

It might sound foolish, but what if focusing on just one thing is the key to unlocking everything else?

One focus unlocks wins.

You have the ability to do more than you think! It just takes locking in on one thing at a time.Master one before another.

I asked the player, “What’s one thing you can focus on over the next few weeks?”

His response: “Probably dribbling…”

Not only did this player’s focus on dribbling unlock more opportunities for him on the court, but it also created opportunities for the other players who played with him.

So let me ask you:What is one thing you need to focus on?

Is it becoming a better communicator? Learning to be more organized? Trying new study techniques? Working on your discipline?

What one thing—if you mastered it by the end of the year—would make you a better student?Athlete? Artist? Actor? Friend?

Don’t wait.

Lock in with foolish focus.
